Outreach

The IceCube & KM3NeT Masterclass

Every spring, our group hosts an IceCube Masterclass. The Masterclass is an annual outreach day-long event where we invite a group of high school-level students to campus. We give a series of interactive lectures and activities to introduce them to the world of particle physics research, and provide hands-on activities to foster long-term interest in fundamental physics.

Students in the masterclass make hands-on measurements using particle detectors, perform a guided analysis of real IceCube data, and participate in a Zoom call with scientists at the South Pole. Throughout the event, they also learn about neutrino physics and life as a scientist.

Starting in 2026, we are also planning to incorporate activities from KM3NeT. A joint masterclass gives students exposure to neutrino telescopes with similar physics goals but very different technical challenges and advantages.

Other events

There are many other local outreach events organized every year through the physics department, which group members participate in. One example is the NetPals program, which involves mentoring middle school students interested in STEM at Cambridge Public Schools.
